Beyond the brief

Things I've done that weren't in any job description.

Reframed an onboarding brief into a vision the CTO backed.

The original ask was to investigate a single feature. Five Why's deep, the real question turned out to be how the entire flagship product was positioned. I rewrote the brief around that, and the strategic case I built from it became the foundation for what's now Evo.

I held this design vision across three years and twelve product divisions. Evo wasn't one project, it was a continuous one. Across executive shifts, strategy pivots, and three components stitched into a single experience, design was the thing that stayed coherent.

Recognised internally as the originator of three workflow shifts.

I researched, championed, piloted and led the roll out of Miro, Figma and Storybook which improved our design culture significantly. I introduced scalable collaboration tools and connected our Figma library to a live component reference engineers could trust.

I personally rebuilt our XD files in Figma to demonstrate the business case for the migration. This became the team standard, cutting technical debt, and unlocking the real-time collaboration we were missing.

Bridged design and engineering.

Worked closely with developers across multiple product divisions, presenting concepts early and smoke-testing builds at handover. The designs that shipped did so consistently with what was specified, because the conversation started before the wireframes were done.

Started a weekly UX catch-up.

A standing hour outside project rhythm for designers to share challenges. It's where I seeded the sprint initiative, and where a lot of our best cross-project thinking happens.

Self-taught design sprints, then ran them with clients.

After learning the methodology in Sprint, I facilitated remote five-day workshops, with customers, and brought a new methodology into the team that's still in use. Colleagues described it as calm and controlled, which was high praise from a team full of strong personalities.

Luke has always been keen on innovation and curious about learning more in regards to UX. It's been a long journey, but to date he has been the originator of a series of improvements that are now implemented in the company. Storybook, Figma and Miro are some.

Yesterday most of Product Design met up for a full day workshop to discuss and define the new 'out of the box' reporting and insights functionality for People First. It's a fairly complex process with many facets to consider.

Despite this, as well as having to cope with a number of strong characters and dominant voices, Luke remained calm and controlled, displayed great techniques and most importantly, asked the right questions in order for us to surface the right answers.

Outside of work, I'm an avid chess player and chess puzzle enthusiast (I even squeezed a few in on my wedding day, priorities, right?). I live with two golden retrievers who've mastered the art of the double dinner scam, a scheme which has worked on me more times than I care to admit.
